SpongeBob SquarePants: Every "Shanghaied" Ending Explained

SpongeBob SquarePants once gave viewers the opportunity to choose the ending of an episode, and so “Shanghaied” became the only one with three different endings. Created by Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants follows the daily adventures of the title character (a sea sponge that looks like a kitchen sponge) and his friends and enemies in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom.

The series premiered on Nickelodeon in 1999 and has since become one of the most beloved Nicktoons, successfully branching out to other media, including comic books, video games, a theater musical, and film. Over the course of 12 seasons, SpongeBob and company have explored many places and met a variety of characters, some of them nice, others not so much – and then there’s the Flying Dutchman, the ghost pirate of Bikini Bottom.

The Flying Dutchman is not the “friendly ghost” type, and plays the role of sea demon, restless soul, or just a ghost flying around and wanting to scare people. SpongeBob has come across with the Flying Dutchman many times, and one of their most notable encounters was in the episode “Shanghaied”, which has three different endings.

In SpongeBob SquarePants’ season 2 episode “Shanghaied” (also known as “You Wish”), SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward end up in the Flying Dutchman’s ship, where the Dutchman explains to them that, for setting foot on the ship, they are now forced to work as his ghostly crew for all eternity. After Squidward is thrown into a chaotic dimension for complaining about serving the Dutchman, and SpongeBob and Patrick’s work turns out to be useless, the Dutchman reveals he’s going to eat them. SpongeBob and Patrick then steal the Dutchman’s dining sock, which he can’t eat without. After fighting over the sock and almost breaking it, the Dutchman decides to grant them three wishes in exchange for the sock’s (safe) return. Patrick wishes he knew about this earlier, and the clock is set back one minute. SpongeBob quickly wishes that Squidward was with them, and he’s brought back. When it’s time to decide who gets the last wish, SpongeBob is chosen – but the others got their chance, too.

When the episode first aired, it included segments with Patchy the Pirate announcing a poll that let viewers decide between three possible endings: SpongeBob, Patrick, or Squidward’s wish. The winner was SpongeBob, and it’s the only ending shown in reruns. In it, he wishes that the Dutchman turns into a vegetarian. His wish is granted, but the trio is turned into fruits and the Dutchman prepares to eat them. In Patrick’s ending, he wishes for gum that never loses its flavor because, if they’re going to be there for eternity, they might as well have fresh breath. As for Squidward, he wishes that he had never met SpongeBob and Patrick – but they never leave the ship and are eaten anyway.

The three endings were only shown during the original American TV airing, but they can be found in the Sea Stories and The First 100 Episodes DVDs. “Shanghaied”’s poll gave viewers the chance to be an active part of SpongeBob SquarePants, and each ending cleverly shows that you truly have to be very careful with what you wish for.
