With Spies In Disguise performing decently, viewers could be looking forward to a Spies In Disguise 2, and here's everything we know. Spies in Disguise 2 has not been officially greenlit but with positive reviews, a good box office haul, and the return of stars Will Smith and Tom Holland, a sequel could happen.
Based on Lucas Martell's 2009 animated short Pigeon: Impossible, Blue Sky Studios' Spies in Disguise reworks its source material as a playful and animated action-comedy that includes homages to classic spy tropes. Lance Sterling (Smith) is the world's most amazing super spy who is essentially an animated version of James Bond. Sterling relies on Walter Beckett (Holland) to develop high-tech gadgets to complete his missions. When framed for stealing a super-weapon, Lance must go off-the-grid and seek Walter's help, who Lance previously fired. However, Lance accidentally ingests Walter's experimental work, which turns him into a pigeon. The duo must figure out how to save the world despite Lance being a pigeon.
There has been no news on whether Spies in Disguise 2 will happen. As previously mentioned, box office numbers and the return of key stars will factor into the decision, but the biggest component could be the uncertain future of the studio. Here's everything we know about Spies in Disguise 2.
Even if Spies in Disguise is a success, the future of Spies in Disguise 2 is in limbo because of Blue Sky Studios' uncertain future. Blue Sky Studios is a subsidiary of 20th Century Fox Animation, which was acquired by Disney when it purchased Fox. Currently, the only film scheduled to be released under the Blue Sky banner is Nimona, which is scheduled to be released until 2022. That being said, none of the movies such as the Ice Age franchise and Ferdinand released before the Disney-Fox merger have sequels in development, which is not a promising sign for Spies in Disguise 2. It's not officially dead and a lot can change, but Spies in Disguise 2 is unlikely to happen.
Spies in Disguise was first announced in 2017 and the movie came out on Christmas Day 2019, which marks a two-year turnaround. If Spies in Disguise 2 happens, it all depends on the schedules of Smith and Holland. Smith had a packed 2019 with Aladdin, Gemini Man, and Spies in Disguise and still has Bad Boys for Life in January 2020. Smith's filming schedule is about to heat up with King Richard, Bright 2, and a potential Bad Boys 4 on the horizon.
On the flip side, Holland's schedule is just as crowded with Cherry, Uncharted, and the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Homecoming 3. However, Spies in Disguise 2 is an animated film, which means Smith and Holland don't have to be in the same place at the same time to film. If the studio announces a sequel in 2020 and the same turnaround from the first film is followed, expect Spies in Disguise 2 to come out sometime in late 2022.
Smith and Holland have clear chemistry so Spies in Disguise 2 should be another team-up between Lance and Walter. Spies in Disguise saw Lance and Walter team up to save the world from the evil villain, Killian (Ben Mendelsohn), a terrorist with a left bionic arm who framed Lance for stealing the super-weapon. Killian could return for his revenge in Spies in Disguise 2 or perhaps a new threat is just what the film needs to stay fresh. Since Walter is a genius, it would be interesting to see what other inventions Lance could use to save the world. Instead of pigeons, Walter could create a different serum to turn Lance into another animal to save the day.
Despite busy filming schedules, Spies in Disguise 2 will only work if both Smith and Holland return, so if the sequel happens, expect both stars to return. Other cast members that could return for Spies in Disguise 2 in some form are Mendelsohn as Killian, Rashida Jones as Marcy Kappel, Karen Gillan as Eyes, and Masi Oka as Katsu Kimura.
