Sigourney Weaver has been appearing in movies for several decades and in that time, she has built a truly iconic career. She is a beloved figure in genre movies as well as a multiple Oscar nominee. Her talents are evident in action films, comedies, dramas and beyond.
It's clear that Weaver is a favorite among film fans, but which of her films do fans like the best? IMDb lists all of Weaver's work along with the user scores so we can see which of her movies were the biggest hits. Here are Sigourney Weaver's best movies according to IMDB.
10 Finding Dory (7.3)
You would have to be a pretty big star to be featured as yourself in a Pixar movie. Apparently, Weaver has reached that level of success as she voiced herself in this massively successful Pixar sequel. The story follows the forgetful fish Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) as she searches for her parents she lost years ago. Weaver provides the celebrity voice of a Marine Institute Dory visits.
Finding Dory might not quite live up to the original, but it is still full of Pixar magic. It's fun to see the old characters return as well as meet some fun new ones. And there are plenty of laughs and heartwarming moments to be had in this fun adventure.
9 The Ice Storm (7.4)
With all the big, high-concept films that Weaver is famous for, it's nice to see her in smaller, more intimate stories every so often. The Ice Storm was an early film from acclaimed director Ang Lee and featured a stellar cast including Kevin Kline, Christina Ricci, and Tobey Maguire. The story was set in 1973 and centers on a middle-class family getting together for the holidays and dealing with their various struggles.
Weaver is a great part of the impressive ensemble as the neighbor who is having an affair with Kline's family man character. The quiet, funny and moving movie is worth seeking out.
8 Snow Cake (7.5)
Snow Cake is another of Weaver's smaller films and probably the least well-known film on this list. But it's another great example of her range as an actor. The film stars Alan Rickman as a lonely man traumatized by a car accident who meets a high-functioning autistic woman (Weaver) who lost her daughter in the same accident. Together, they help each other navigate their own personal struggles.
It's great seeing two amazing actors like Weaver and Rickman in leading roles in a small drama. The story is touching and the performances are great which makes it a compelling little film.
7 A Monster Calls (7.5)
A Monster Calls is an inventive children's film that deals with some powerful and important topics, not usually seen in this kind of film. The story follows a young boy who is struggling with his mother's terminal illness and how his life is changing as a result. He is visited by a monster who helps him through this difficult time. Weaver stars as the boy's strict grandmother who becomes his guardian.
Despite the fantasy elements of the films, this is a poignant tale about grief and how we deal with it in different ways.
6 Ghostbusters (7.8)
Weaver has been a part of many iconic film series and has the honor of being one of the founding cast members of Ghostbusters. The supernatural comedy follows a group of scientists who go into business as ghost catchers and soon find themselves the only ones who can stop the destruction of the entire world.
Weaver plays a woman who becomes the target of an ancient and evil spirit which leads her to call the Ghostbusters and become the love interest of Peter Venkman (Bill Murray). Thanks to a talented and funny cast and some great creature work, Ghostbusters is a hugely entertaining comedy classic that still has a huge influence today.
5 Avatar (7.8)
Weaver returned to the sci-fi genre and reteamed with James Cameron for this ground-breaking epic. The film is set on a distant world of Pandora where humans attempt to connect with the native creatures of the planet while the government attempts to extract the planet's resources. Weaver plays a scientist who holds great respect for the aliens and wants to learn from them.
The movie went on to become the highest-grossing film of all-time so it's not surprising it's among one of Weaver's most popular films. She is also set to return to this world with Cameron's many Avatar sequels he has lined up.
4 Annie Hall (8.0)
Woody Allen might be a director few people are willing to work with now, but there is no denying he has made some extremely popular films. Annie Hall might be the most acclaimed film in his long career. Allen stars as a neurotic comic who falls in love with a free spirit (Diane Keaton). The two continue to struggle with a passionate relationship despite now seeming to be right for each other.
Weaver has a tiny blink-and-you-miss-it role as one of Allen's other girlfriends. The movie is filled with irreverent humor that felt incredibly fresh at the time. Sadly, given Allen's current reputation, it's a difficult movie to revisit.
3 Wall-E (8.4)
Weaver's first collaboration with the brilliant minds at Pixar came with one of their boldest films to date. Wall-E is a film about an adorable robot who is sent to Earth after it has been abandoned due to excessive garbage. As he slowly cleans the planet, he meets another robot and falls in love. Weaver provides the voice of a computer system that oversees all of society.
The first half of the movie plays like a silent film yet is spellbinding. Watching these two robots form a bond is heartwarming and the movie is filled with timely messages about overconsumption and the protection of the planet.
2 Aliens (8.4)
Weaver returned to her breakout role of Ellen Ripley in this action-packed sequel from James Cameron. Although Ripley was a true survivor in the first film, Aliens turns her into a genuine action hero. After waking up decades after the evens of the first film, Ripley joins a group of marines to go back to the planet where the alien was discovered and wipe out the threat once and for all.
Weaver is mesmerizing in the lead role which earned her a rare Oscar nomination for an action movie role. The rest of the cast is stellar and Cameron creates some truly thrilling sequences in a movie that lives up to its predecessor.
1 Alien (8.4)
It is fitting that the movie that made Weaver a star would also be her most popular movie to date. The Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi horror film follows an industrial spaceship that investigates a distress signal on a mysterious planet and comes in contact with a deadly and evolving alien creature.
Alien is one of the best and most suspenseful horror films ever made. The creature design of the Xenomorph is iconic and one of the most memorable movie villains of all time. Weaver also created a character who has gone down as one of the greatest cinematic heroes.
