For the eleven seasons of Modern Family, fans have watched the romance between Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hyland) and Dylan Marshall (Reid Ewing) go from strength to strength. Although they are now happily married with their little family, both characters had to grow and mature separately to get it right.
All fans know what a disaster Haley and Dylan were at the beginning. Haley acted like a shallow, self-absorbed teenager, who had a nasty jealous streak. Dylan was also an irresponsible teenager, who didn't think about how his actions could affect those around him. Want to know why they broke up often? Keep reading to discover the 5 worst things Haley did to Dylan (& 5 he did to her).
10 Haley: The Arvin-Haley-Dylan love triangle
One of the biggest storylines in season 10 revolved around the love triangle between Arvin, Haley, and Dylan. For weeks, fans watched as Haley was torn between her love for Dylan and her new boyfriend Arvin after the fashion icon kissed her high school flame at a 'Fourth of July' party ("I Love a Parade").
Instead of making a definitive choice, Haley cheats on Arvin further by sleeping with Dylan. Even when she insists on breaking their 'relationship' off for Arvin, Haley struggles to let Dylan go. Although it was difficult for her, it couldn't have been easy for Dylan either, who would have been confused about where they stood. She could have at least been honest.
9 Dylan: His hasty proposal
In the episode "Dude Ranch", the audience can see how immature and fragile Haley and Dylan's relationship was when he stormed off after Haley (Claire) rejected him. For some reason, Dylan makes the impromptu decision to propose to Haley in front of her family and friends. When Claire refuses to allow it to happen, he goes missing.
While taking time for himself, Dylan was found by a worker who then offered him a job as a ranch hand. Immediately, he accepted the job and broke up with Haley, who is devastated. Dylan fails to realize that his hasty decisions have also toyed with Haley's emotions and affected her too.
8 Haley: Breaks up with him over the phone
Haley may have matured over the seasons but she proved to be one of the most inconsiderate people when she was a teen. Especially when it came to Dylan. On several occasions, Haley decided to break up with Dylan - whether it was because he was seen with another girl or because she had lost interest.
Instead of doing it face-to-face, Haley does it over the phone. The harshest break-up that occurred between them happened in the episode "Mother Tucker" when she dumps him over text for her study partner. If Haley cared about him as much as she said she did, he deserved to hear it in person. Even Phil reprimands her for her cold treatment.
7 Dylan: Behavior on Disney Trip
When Dylan broke up with Haley in "Dude Ranch", he suggested that the two were in different places and needed to take some time for themselves. However, Dylan made a reappearance in the episode "Disneyland" when Haley discovers he was working as a Dapper Dan.
At this point, Haley had become interested in the nephew of Claire's friend and was considering going on a date. However, Dylan became jealous and got into a fight with Ethan, warning him to back off. He disregards Haley's feelings as she tells them that it wasn't the right time to talk. If Dylan wanted her to be happy, he would have been civilized.
6 Haley: Used him as a rebound
Over the eleven years, fans have seen Haley and Dylan engage in an on-and-off-again relationship. There have been times where the break-ups have been a result of the wrong timing. However, the breakup that occurred in the episode "The More You Ignore Me" was to be expected as Haley was on the rebound from Andy.
It wasn't fair to Dylan as the audience could see how much Haley and Andy wanted to be together. Haley didn't seem to care about her boyfriend in "Summer Lovin'" when she asked Andy if he had feelings for her. She also broke up with him after seeing Andy with Beth. It wasn't fair on Dylan to remain in the relationship if she wasn't sure.
5 Dylan: "Haley Dunphy Dome"
Dylan may need to reconsider what he believes is romantic when he reveals another grand gesture in "The Big Game" to Haley. In this episode, Haley and Dylan meet up as the Dunphy-Pritchett-Tuckers attend Manny's football game. Here, Dylan takes Haley to the bleachers and reveals a message he scratched onto them.
On the first impression, the phrase "Haley Dunphy Dome" appears to be a sweet gesture as it looks as if he is dedicating the space to her. However, Dylan ruins it by explaining he wanted it to say "Haley Dunphy Do Me". Straight away, it implies that he views Haley as a conquest than a person. Thank goodness they didn't get back together at this moment as it wasn't right.
4 Haley: Toxic jealousy
It has to be said, the relationship between Haley and Dylan has not been the healthiest as Haley has been shown to have a toxic jealousy streak. When Haley and Dylan first got together, fans knew it wouldn't last as the teens were immature, jealous and naïve.
Most of the time, Haley displayed some toxic behavior as she became possessive over him - even if they were broken up. The worst incident being in episode "Fizbo" when Haley unleashed a poisonous scorpion on Luke's birthday party because Dylan was talking to the entertainer. Not only did it show she didn't trust him, but she put everyone else in danger.
3 Dylan: "In The Moonlight (Do Me)" song
Haley may have thought the song Dylan wrote for her was the most romantic thing ever but she should reconsider. When Haley and Dylan first began dating, everyone was still on the fence about him, including Phil. In the episode "The Incident", it looked as if he was taking a step in the right direction until he sang "In The Moonlight (Do Me)".
Haley hasn't realized how embarrassing and awkward the song is. Not only does he confess his desire to sleep with her, but Dylan says it in front of her family. Since Dylan is also part of a band, the song would be performed in front of hundreds. It could have brought Haley public humiliation and embarrassed her with his friends.
2 Haley: Never stuck up for him with her family
Fans can't help but feel for Dylan as he has always been rejected by the Dunphy clan for not being good enough. On several occasions, Dylan has had to listen to Claire's objections about their relationship as well as belittle him over his intelligence. She has also stated that she doesn't believe Dylan is good enough for Haley - which would be hard for anyone to hear.
The worst thing about the situation is that Haley has never pulled up her mother on these comments. If Dylan makes her happy and treats her well, then what does it matter if he is "good enough"? With Haley not reprimanding Claire on these comments, it's no wonder that his self-esteem takes a dive.
1 Dylan: Blindsided her with his new marriage
Everyone believes that Dylan hasn't got a malicious bone in his body. However, if this was the case then he wouldn't have blindsided her with his new family. This all occurred in "Alone Time" when Dylan insisted he dropped in on The Dunphys.
Dylan claimed that he only wanted to pick up his Rubik's Cube, but did he have to bring his whole family with him? Haley had no idea that Dylan had settled down and was completely blindsided by his new relationship. When he mentioned he was married to a Doctor, it was like he was trying to rub his happiness in her face. If that was what Dylan intended, he got what he wanted as Haley struggled with the news.
