The unprecedented Watchmen/DC crossover is set to end with Doomsday Clock #12, delivering a titanic battle between the Dr. Manhattan and Superman. Given his ability to see time non-linearly, Dr. Manhattan already knows how this fight will end. However, it seems like this fight may be over before it's even begun.
The twelve issue series revealed that Dr. Manhattan has been actively manipulating events within the DC Universe since before Flashpoint, including the New 52. Various heroes including Batman, The Flash, and Superman have found signs of his handiwork, despite Dr. Manhattan using his powers to create formidable distractions for the heroes, including the re-emergence of such figures as Eobard Thawne, the Flashpoint Batman and even Superman's father, Jor-El. All roads lead to a final showdown between Superman and Dr. Manhattan, where Dr. Manhattan believes either Superman will destroy him - or Dr. Manhattan will destroy this reality.
As the official preview (via CBR) indicate, however, the fight isn't so clear-cut. Just as the two are facing off for their shutdown, numerous foreign heroes, including Geomancer and Black Adam, arrive on the scene to hold Superman "accountable" for a massacre in Moscow secretly perpetuated by Doctor Manhattan. Other government-aligned superheroes around the world are seen mobilizing - including the Atomic Knights - in what could clearly spill into a superhuman World War III. Superman begs the heroes to take the confrontation to a less populated area, but his pleas fall on deaf ears as he quickly attacked from all sides.
Released in 1986, the seminal Watchmen, written by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, saw a similar conspiracy to end the Cold War. Ultimately, a conspiracy targeting several superheroes was revealed to be the work of the master manipulator Ozymandias, who faked an alien invasion with a nuclear explosion at the heart of New York City. The resulting tragedy galvanizes the US and Russia to end the escalating Cold War and face a common foe. At the end of Watchmen, Doctor Manhattan declares his fascination with life as well as his intention to create some of his own. Given his actions in Doomsday Clock, it appears he has done just that.
Still, Doomsday Clock's final conclusion might not matter either. It's certainly no coincidence that Doomsday Clock is ending just days after the first season finale of Watchmen's follow-up on HBO. Despite the increased visibility of the Watchmen brand, Doomsday Clock itself feels strangely irrelevant amid other major DC events, like Year of the Villain and the Justice/Doom War. The series has been running since 2017, and while it was met with a certain degree of enthusiasm during its debut, the book feels like it will likely be lost in the shuffle of several major events. It's hard to say if Doomsday Clock will stick the landing like its predecessor - or simply fall into relative obscurity after its conclusion.
Doomsday Clock is available in stores on December 18th.
