Big Bang Theory: The IQs Of The Main Characters | ScreenRant

Today we will be exploring the IQ's of the main characters from the hit show The Big Bang Theory. Since the majority of the characters spend the shows 12 season run bragging about how smart they are, we decided to put the numbers to the test and see how they really stack up. The shows' main cast has a variety of characters who work in a variety of different fields and we thought it would be fun to see where they fall in terms of their IQ!

It is important to note that only two of the characters IQ's are ever explicitly stated, so the rest of these numbers are approximations based upon achievements and behaviour. It is also important to note that one's IQ is not an accurate predictor of intelligence nor success. There are many things that go into what makes a person "smart" and IQ is only one small element of that. However, this show does place a lot of worth on one's IQ, so we thought it would be a fun way to examine these characters!

7 Penny- ~110

Though Penny is often written off, in terms of intelligence, for not being a genius/scientist like the rest of her friends, that does not mean that she has nothing to bring to the table. Penny is clever and resourceful. She is able to find ways to keep herself afloat while struggling through dates that provide free meals, beneficial friendships, and odd jobs (including acting, waitressing, and her own short-lived company.)

She is of average intelligence, which places her at the lower end of this list but she is still one of our favourite characters and it would be fair to point out that her emotional intelligence is far higher than those around her- as they tend to be quite book smart but rather uncouth in social situations.

6 Howard- ~150

Howard is a genius, there is no doubt about that. He is a brilliant engineer, went to space, and knows his stuff. He can build robots for fun and even has an advanced degree. He knows what he is doing and has confidence in his ability to excel in his field.

We have placed him lower than his friends on our list as he does not have a doctorate and makes several concerning mistakes throughout the series that do hint towards a lack of common sense. But we won't hold that against him! Even though we might not have ranked him higher than his friends, he is still ranking higher than the majority of the population!

5 Bernadette- ~160

Bernadette develops drugs and medications for a pharmaceutical company. She did not stumble blindly into her career. No, she worked her butt off to get her doctorate and become one of the most brilliant minds in her industry. Though the sheer amount of geniuses within this cast may dull the shine of her accomplishments, it is important to note how hard it is to get a Ph.D. and how big of a deal getting one truly is.

Though her emotional intelligence leaves something to be desired. While it is important to note that Bernadette is behind several big lifestyle changes for several of the characters within the series, her delivery and demeanor needs a bit of work as she can be rather harsh and mean at times.

4 Raj- ~170

Though it might drive Howard mad if he knew that we ranked Raj higher than him, we are ranking these characters based on intelligence- not on their feelings towards said ranking. Raj is a brilliant astrophysicist who has been celebrated for his contributions to the field.

Though he does struggle socially and is known for putting his foot in his mouth, he is truly intelligent in a traditional way and we won't hold his more awkward moments against his many achievements.

3 Leonard- 173

Leonard is one of the only characters in the main cast of The Big Bang Theory whose IQ is directly mentioned in the show. Though he is often seen as the weak link in his own family, it is important to note that that is not a fair comparison by any means.

Leonard is a respected scientist in his field, has received several accolades for his work, written many papers (some of which he even presented,) and is one of the most brilliant minds in the country.

2 Amy- ~180

Though Amy's IQ is never explicitly stated in the show, we can assume that she is one of the groups' more brilliant members. Her studies and experiments in neuroscience are a sight to behold, she understands how to communicate with Sheldon in a way that makes him feel understood and comfortable, and at the end of the series, she receives one of the highest accolades a person in her field can hope to achieve.

One wonderful thing about Amy is that, unlike the rest of the group, she has been able to master several different types of intelligence; including both traditional and emotional. She knows how to communicate open and honestly with those around her in a way that makes them feel seen and heard and is also a totally BAMF scientist.

1 Sheldon- 187

Sheldon is one of the few characters whose IQ is directly stated on the show during its 12 year run. Sheldon is truly a genius. He is the kind of person that is so intelligent that he forgets that other people need a bit more time to understand things that he gets immediately. He attended college at the age of 11 years old and is one of the more notable figures in his field.

The most complex/brain-busting scientific theories are nothing to him and, as consequence, he has a rather unfortunate habit of seeing himself as above the other people in the world as, to him, they are held back by their comparably simple minds.
