Rick and Morty has made a triumphant return to TV with brand new episodes. Anyone joining the show for the first time may not understand all the in jokes and references to the past seasons, however.

What's more, if you're fortunate enough to come across a Rick and Morty meme, you might not have a clue what they're talking about. We've found 10 memes that maybe only true fans would understand, and we're  going to explain them to newcomers!

10 One Purpose

The hilarious butter robot is one of the best jokes from the show. Rick creates a droid that only has one purpose in life—not just to serve, but to actually serve butter. This is an explanation as to what anyone's purpose in life really is: just to do one job well.

However, this meme takes that idea and runs with it. The internet has picked Google Chrome as the most popular browser, suggesting that the only purpose of Internet Explorer is to help users download its competition.

9 Dead Inside

Rick's emotional state is constantly in flux. He's suffered trauma in the past, with Rick losing his wife a long time ago. He's quickly become lonely and cold, pushing his family away (except his grandchildren) and could be described as dead inside.

This meme is pretty powerful therefore as Rick pretty much acts like nothing gets to him. It's a pretty funny meme, therefore, although true fans know the truth: he is actually bothered by the words of others, which perhaps makes it even more accurate.

8 I'm In!

One of the last episodes of the show saw a heist in progress that had Rick put together a crack team of experts for the job. It was clearly a hilarious parody of other heist movies, which have common tropes associated with them.

One meme already popping up from the episode is the 'I'm In' meme. Fans are using it in so many contexts, but the original use of the joke was to make fun of the recruitment process of these heist movies.

7 True Fans

Rick and Morty fans are pretty common these days, but it's not always easy to find one. Usually, you have to make a reference to the show before you both realize that you're fans of the series. Finding a fellow fan is a pretty fun moment.

The I like what you got meme started a while ago, and references the episode where Rick and Morty had to impress intergalactic space gods with their singing talents in a competition. It seems like this meme is implying that this friend just became the new favorite.

6 Uber Drivers

The grandfather and grandson duo usually travel around in a space vehicle that also doubles as a car. It's rare for them to be seen using any other kind of transport, although sometimes they are forced to do so—much like us in our every day lives.

In this episode of the show, Rick and Morty travel to a dimension that sees them interact with a series of strange creatures that Rick kind of created. This particular one offers them a lift, and, although it's their only choice, they clearly aren't happy about.

5 Sci-Fi Nonsense

Every science fiction show has a habit of creating ridiculous words in order to sound like it's being really scientific. However, most of the time the language used is over complicated and doesn't actually mean anything at all.

This show has the same problem, with Rick often coming up with nonsense that no one could possibly understand. However, the writers clearly made fun of this, with this scene and the meme that has been created from it; this is an ongoing meta joke from the show.

4 The Derivative

This meme is pretty relatable, as we've all be known to create extra emails in order to carry on gaining free trials. However, the use of multiple Ricks might confuse fans that haven't been paying attention or watching the show long enough.

There's a whole council of Ricks, with multiple versions of the same character from different dimensions. Each one is slightly less Rick than the last but is the derivative of the first, much like the fake emails that are being created, with slight alterations.

3 Pumpkin Rick

Pickle Rick has become a weird obsession among Rick and Morty fans. The episode was one of the greatest from the series, but that doesn't explain why everyone feels the need to endlessly talk about the creation of Pickle Rick.

This meme is not only making fun of the fact that Halloween will probably create Pumpkin Rick, as we have seen other versions of this in the comics, but it's also pointing out that people are pretty sick of this ongoing trend.

2 Season 4

The gap between season 3 and 4 was one of the longest periods of time that fans ever had to wait for this show. Those who were really keen to watch the latest episode couldn't wait much longer, with the anticipation for more becoming overwhelming.

This meme perfectly represents how every fan actually feels about this wait. True fans will understand exactly what emotion that meme is referring to while bringing us back to a pretty funny portal moment from the show itself.

1 Szechuan Sauce

The szechuan sauce craze was not the finest moment for fans of this show. McDonalds revealed that they would be bringing the popular sauce back to restaurants after Rick and Morty had shown there was clearly an audience for it.

Unfortunately, the stores sold out almost instantly, and people started getting angry over the lack of source. As this meme points out, people weren't too happy with how fans reacted, with even the creators of the show regretting some of their decisions over the incident.
