Marvel's X-MEN Reboot Gives Magneto His Own Comic Story

While the new X-Men reality has taken shape in Marvel's comic book universe, Charles Xavier has been leading the way. Finally, it's time for Magneto to get a standalone Giant-Size X-Men all to himself.

The series of one-shots was previously announced with Jean Grey and Emma Frost in the starring roles come February, written by Jonathan Hickman -- the writer responsible for the entire House of X and Powers of X reboot. Now Marvel has announced that Giant-Size X-Men: Magneto will be the next to be released. This time pairing Hickman with artist Ben Oliver. And as Magneto has largely remained silent as the new mutant nation of Krakoa has taken shape, and more or less kept silent as one of Mutantkind's carefully selected leaders, it sounds like he's been enduring one of his most insufferable struggles thus far: making peace with humanity.

It really shouldn't be overstated that for all of Moira McTaggert's world-changing powers, and her apparent corruption of Charles Xavier's mind, none of the mutants' success would be possible with Magneto putting his ego aside, and agreeing to join Charles Xavier. Indeed, his sworn promise to never again be enemies, only brothers (guiding the future for mutants everywhere) was one of the most meaningful moments of the entire X-Men reset. Charles Xavier finally decided to do what he must to save mutants. But for Magneto, leading a mutant nation is nothing new. Only this time, he has all of mutantkind, including the X-Men's most powerful soldiers to command. So how much will it take for him to seek peace... instead of victory?

With the announcement comes the first cover art courtesy of Ben Oliver, who became known to many Marvel fans through his covers for Ultimate X-Men. “It's been many years since I last worked on an X-Men related project, and I couldn't be happier than to be working with Jonathan,” Oliver said. “I've long been a fan of Jonathan's work, and Magneto as a character, so to collaborate on this project is fantastic.”

As mentioned above, Giant-Size X-Men: Magneto is only the second of five total one-shots currently planned, and for many fans reading every book of the X-Men relaunch, an issue devoted solely to Magneto will be long overdue. The good news is that when all is said and done, a giant-size chapter all to himself may offer greater insight into the former villain's mind and motivations than he could have gotten as a more prominent voice in a reboot full of them. Of course, only time will tell if the Magneto one-shot from Hickman and Oliver will be what fans were missing, or leave them wanting more.

Giant-Size X-Men: Magneto will arrive in your local comic book shop in March of 2020.
