Frozen II is expected to be a smash hit, with projections now pointing to a $100 million opening weekend. Frozen made a killing at the box office in 2013, giving its direct competition, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, a run for its money. Its first three days, Frozen saw a haul of $67.4 million, while its five-day gross topped out at $93.6 million. This is around $5 million behind Zootopia, which still stands as Disney's highest-grossing non-Pixar film to date. But if we are to believe current predictions, Frozen II may change that.
When Frozen hit theaters in 2013, the world went wild. With fans singing Elsa's famous hymn to personal liberation ("Let It Go") and critics raving over the film's winning mix of humor and heart, it quickly became clear that Disney had a phenomenon on its hands. The film ended its box office run with a whopping $1.2 billion, making a sequel inevitable.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Frozen II is not only projected to outgross the first film, but is also tracking for a $100 million domestic opening (compared to Frozen's $93 million debut). That would put it at the top of Walt Disney Animation Studios' list of highest-grossing movies and set the bar very high for subsequent releases. Thanksgiving weekend has seen some of the biggest box office performances ever, with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire holding the #1 spot for that release slot and Frozen close behind. If Frozen II outperforms current expectations, it could end up setting a new record.
While Disney and Pixar dominate the list of highest-grossing animated movies, other studios have been stepping up the competition. Illumination Entertainment's Minions made over $1 billion worldwide in 2015, an incredibly solid pull for a non-Disney animated feature. And while it was only a modest hit at the box office, Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse ended up beating Disney releases Ralph Breaks the Internet and Incredibles 2 to the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, breaking Disney's six-year winning streak.
Judging from its astounding trailer, Frozen II looks even more beautiful, emotional, and thematically powerful than its predecessor. The film will take Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa (Idina Menzel) far beyond the kingdom of Arendelle and into a vast, unfamiliar world. And as an extra incentive to get fans of the original back into theaters, Frozen II's marketing has promised to reveal the source of Elsa's powers and solve the mystery of what really happened to her and Anna's parents. It's little wonder that the sequel is already tracking so well.
