Tim Miller's Terminator: Dark Fate is R-rated and features quite a bit of violence but certainly not as much as other movies. The science fiction film hits all the expected genre tropes, and won’t necessarily surprise moviegoers with transgressive horror or frightening jump scares.
Terminator: Dark Fate features character reprisals from both Linda Hamilton (Sarah Connor) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (T-800), who last appeared together in the 1991 sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day. In the latest film, co-produced by James Cameron, Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes) is targeted by a new type of terminator, Rev-9 (Gabrielle Luna), as she’s believed to be the mother of a future rebellion leader. Mackenzie Davis co-stars as a cyborg sent back in time to lend assistance in the battle against Rev-9. Connor and T-800 are asked to join the fight. Terminator: Dark Fate was written by David S. Goyer, Justin Rhodes, and Billy Ray.

The MPAA has given Terminator: Dark Fate an R rating (meaning nobody under 17 can see unsupervised) for "violence throughout, language and brief nudity," while the BBFC has given it a 15 rating (meaning nobody under 15 will be admitted) for “strong violence, bloody images, language.” But what does all that really mean? In comparison to modern action films, Terminator: Dark Fate is relatively tame. It’s not like viewers need to prepare for Game of Thrones-like gore or heightened psychological horror that could result in some rough early morning dreams. Terminator: Dark Fate certainly isn’t pleasant throughout - as the franchise premise suggests - but it’s not a film that was structurally designed to terrify audiences with horror that could translate over into real life.
Terminator: Dark Fate has a bit of violence, as expected. During the war, people are shot, stabbed, and impaled. The sound design amplifies these moments for a visceral effect. This is an R rated film about cyborgs and humans battling it out, so naturally things get intense and bloody. Beyond that, Terminator: Dark Fate doesn’t reach too far with its violence.
There’s a small bit of android nudity in Terminator: Dark Fate, as there has been in previous installments. In addition, there’s some human bare butt as well. Terminator: Dark Fate includes heavy swearing throughout. Overall, though, the new franchise film thematically aligns with installments of the past, yet the language is arguably more intense.
