Another live-action Star Wars series is coming to Disney's streaming service, and it'll be a Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prequel. Disney's interest in expanding the Star Wars IP generated standalone ideas that began with Rogue One in 2016. Now they are looking to bring Diego Luna back as Cassian Andor for their next live-action series.
While Star Wars is best known for their giant, blockbuster movies, their next play is on Disney's streaming service. Jon Favreau is currently in the process of filming the first ever live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, which is expected to launch with Disney+ next year. That said, the company doesn't just want a single series on their new platform and are returning to the Rogue One era for the next adventure.

Disney announced today that Diego Luna is returning to star as Cassian Andor in a new live-action series for Disney+. The series will be a prequel to the character's role in Rogue One, which is the only possibility given the entire squadron died. There is currently no showrunner attached to the project, but the press release did tease what the series will be about: "The rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire." Additionally, Luna shared his excitement to return to a galaxy far, far away, saying:
"Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me. I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply."
The Mouse House and Lucasfilm were never going to make just a single live-action series for their streaming service and will instead now have (at least) two Star Wars series to trot out on a regular basis. But, whereas Favreau's Mandalorian came together rather quickly, it may be a bit longer for the Cassian led series to get going. The press release noted that production will begin sometime next year, but Variety's Justin Kroll shared that it could be much later in the year due to Luna's commitment for another season of Narcos.
This new Cassian series is just the latest example of the Star Wars universe sticking close to the original trilogy timeline. Some fans may be ready to see the galaxy far, far away actually dive into something that isn't as familiar, but that likely won't be the case with this new series. While Luna is the only confirmed returnee at this point, the return of Alan Tudyk as K-2SO seems likely. But, since it will also be largely focused on the earlier days of the Rebellion, Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly) or Bail Organa (Jimmy Smits) could return too. If the series really wants to dive deep into the lore, characters from Star Wars Rebels could possibly make live-action appearances, while even a slightly younger Leia or even Darth Vader himself could appear.
There's plenty of additional details that still need to come for the Cassian-led series, so hopefully those details will be made official sooner rather than later. This also gives ILM's new TV studio another likely project to work on after The Mandalorian. Either way, stay tuned for more news on the latest live-action Star Wars series starring Diego Luna.
