Another live-action Star Wars series is coming to Disney's streaming service, and it'll be a Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prequel. Disney's interest in expanding the Star Wars IP generated standalone ideas that began with Rogue One in 2016. Now they are looking to bring Diego Luna back as Cassian Andor for their next live-action series.
While Star Wars is best known for their giant, blockbuster movies, their next play is on Disney's streaming service. Jon Favreau is currently in the process of filming the first ever live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, which is expected to launch with Disney+ next year. That said, the company doesn't just want a single series on their new platform and are returning to the Rogue One era for the next adventure.
Disney announced today that Diego Luna is returning to star as Cassian Andor in a new live-action series for Disney+. The series will be a prequel to the character's role in Rogue One, which is the only possibility given the entire squadron died. There is currently no showrunner attached to the project, but the press release did tease what the series will be about: "The rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire." Additionally, Luna shared his excitement to return to a galaxy far, far away, saying:
"Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me. I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply."
