Niantic's popular mobile game Pokémon Go is about to get even better, as the developer has revealed that the much-requested PvP trainer battles are coming soon. The augmented reality Pokémon-hunting game was released in summer 2016 and quickly became everyone's new obsession, and there have been numerous updates since then... but none that added a PvP element allowing players to compete with other trainers. It looks like that's about to change.
Within the first year of its release, Pokémon Go had reached 750 million global downloads., and by summer 2018 the game had made an absolutely staggering $1.8 billion. While the number of active players has dropped off since the initial rush, amid a competitive mobile market, 2018 additions like a friends list, trading, and new Pokémon additions have brought players back, and attracted new trainers to the game.

The promise that PvP trainer battles are coming to Pokémon Go is sure to bring even more players into the game, and Niantic has offered a first look at how those battles will work. To help keep things balanced and ensure that the PvP mode is accessible to as many players as possible, there will be three different Trainer Battle Leagues: Great, Ultra, and Master. The main distinction between these leagues is the cap on Pokémon CP (combat points), with the Great League capped at 1,500 CP per Pokémon, Ultra League at 2,500 CP per Pokémon, and the Master League uncapped.
Players will be limited to three Pokémon per team for Trainer Battles, and in the Great and Ultra Leagues will have to play more strategically, rather than simply relying on maxed-out CP. This seems like a sensible way to balance the scales for lower-level players, and even players with a collection of high-CP Pokémon will likely get a kick out of playing strategically within the CP caps of the Great and Ultra leagues.
Niantic has been teasing PvP battles for a while now, but after two and a half of years of Pokémon Go it's still something of a surprise to see actual concrete plans for the competitive mode finally emerge. Unfortunately there's still no word on when exactly PvP trainer battles will be coming to the game, but we'll keep you updated on any further developments.
