Digital artist Datrinti has envisaged one of the biggest dream meet-ups in the world of comic book movies, Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel, in an amazing piece of fan art. With the recent release of the Captain Marvel trailer to much fanfare, Marvel Studios are currently gearing up for their first female-led solo superhero movie, with Brie Larson in the title role and both Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg returning as Nick Fury and Agent Coulson respectively. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel promises to give some vital backstory to both S.H.I.E.L.D. and the landscape of the MCU as a whole when it lands in theaters in March 2019.
In terms of female-fronted superhero movies, Captain Marvel certainly has a lot to live up to. Although DC's shared universe hasn't quite lived up to the success of Marvel's, Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman proved to be a bona fide critical and commercial smash. The movie was also a landmark in terms of gender equality and was hailed for its depiction of a female superhero. Next, Gal Gadot's incarnation of the Amazonian warrior is set to return in Wonder Woman 1984 just seven short months after the release of Captain Marvel.

With 2019 set to be a fantastic year for female superheros, Datrinti (Tiago Ribeiro) has brought together Gadot's Wonder Woman and Larson's Captain Marvel in a brilliantly inspiring piece of digital art. The piece puts the two powerful heroes gauntlet-to-glove, though they'll be going head-to-head in 2019 when both movies are released.
A regular creator of superhero-themed digital art, Datrinti's latest piece leans slightly more toward the DC art style but presents both characters in a polished and realistic way, with the glowing light between them hinting at an unspoken shared goal that transcends the barriers of their franchises.
The ongoing rivalry between Marvel and DC, combined with the fact that both of these characters are their franchises' respective leads when it comes to female-led solo movies, means that Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman 1984 will almost certainly be held up and directly compared. Whether Captain Marvel can compete with Wonder Woman's success remains to be seen, but while the consistent quality of the MCU gives Carol Danvers a distinct advantage, the DCEU certainly benefited from being the first of the two franchises to release a female-fronted effort.
However, the fact that these two movies are so hotly anticipated after many years of studios solely producing male-fronted superhero fare is a strong sign of progress worth celebrating in itself and it's that spirit that comes across in the artwork above.
