Tara Reid Claims American Pie 5 May Film in 2018

Sharknado star Tara Reid believes that American Pie 5 will happen later this year, and that she will return to play the character of Vicky Lathum again. Since the last big-screen outing for the adult comedy franchise in 2012, there have been no formal announcements from Universal about continuing it. But speaking in a recent interview, Reid has indicated that it may reportedly be fast-tracked to production before the end of 2018.

American Pie first appeared in US theaters in 1999, and the sweet-natured-but-gross comedy caught the zeitgeist with audiences at the time. Costing only $11M to make, it earned over $235M globally with both overseas and domestic fans making it a hit. The film ostensibly followed Jim Levenstein (Jason Biggs) and his pals in the quest to lose their virginity. The success of the film spawned three further cinematic outings, with varying degrees of critical and financial success. While Reid reprised her character for American Pie 2, she was missing for American Wedding. But she appeared again in American Reunion, which managed to get the full original cast together again. That film did poor business in the US, but scored big overseas and eventually took over $234m from a $50m budget.

There have been no official updates about American Pie 5 - or whatever the movie would be called - but Reid has long championed another sequel and indicated her fondness for the character she plays. When she recently spoke to CinePOP, she made this statement, which could point to the film breaking away from development hell very shortly:

"I met the directors [Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg] recently at the Emmy party and I said, 'Let's do the fifth movie, the franchise needs another movie.' They replied: 'It will happen! We're going to make another! ' It will be incredible to come back. American Pie is American Pie. Movies were a part of American culture, it's a classic. It is known all over the world. I'm very excited. It's going to be a great year for me, with Sharknado's debut and the possibility of filming yet another American Pie in 2018."

It should be noted that this stems from a quick conversation between Reid and the co-directors at a party, and certainly doesn't provide any positive proof that the film is moving forward. She also only hints at the "possibility" of filming starting this year as well. However, it adds to a number of rumors that have circulated regarding a completed script for the film, with Reid herself previously hinting that it would take place in Las Vegas. It was actually reported back in August 2012 that Hurwitz and Schlossberg had secured a deal with Universal to film another entry in the franchise, but no further updates were offered following that announcement. The pair's most recent projects have included Blockers and Cobra Kai.

While it might not seem to be a film that general audiences are clamoring for, the previous overseas success and continued interest in the brand points to a possibly lucrative venture as long as the material stands up. It would also depend on who would return to the franchise after another lengthy delay, especially with essential cast members like Seann William Scott committing to projects like Lethal Weapon. Reid is certainly eager for more outings, but it still remains to be seen as to whether or not American Pie 5 will actually go before cameras later this year.
