Dominic Monaghan has joined the cast of Star Wars: Episode IX. Director J.J. Abrams started production on the sequel trilogy finale earlier this month, well ahead of its December 2019 release date. As has become par for the course for Abrams and Lucasfilm, plot details are hard to come by, but that hasn't stopped fans from theorizing. One thing that is confirmed is the movie's ensemble, which combines original trilogy icons, sequel trilogy veterans, and some newcomers to bring the Skywalker saga to a close.
The sheer number of actors included on the studio's press release when principal photography commenced would have led some to believe that all of the roles had been cast. However, there was apparently at least one more part up for grabs, and now Abrams is set to have a reunion with one of his Lost actors.

Deadline reports Monaghan is now signed on to Star Wars 9 in a (surprise!) mystery role. In addition to his stint on Abrams' TV series Lost, the actor is best known for portraying Merry in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Monaghan has kept busy in the years since, appearing in multiple films and TV shows, but Episode IX is without question his most high-profile gig since Lost went off the air in 2010.
As for who Monaghan can be playing, it's difficult to make any predictions at this point in time since there's so little information to go off of. It seems safe to assume he's playing a smaller, supporting role and won't factor heavily into the plot. Episode IX already has a lot on its plate as it looks to wrap up the stories of its returning heroes and villains, and it would be a shame if any of those characters were shortchanged after audiences have been following them for years. Still, it'll be interesting to see how exactly Monaghan's mystery character fits in, since he's someone who could easily play a member of the First Order, Resistance, or someone else entirely. It could even be something as minor as a vocal cameo, a la Joseph Gordon-Levitt in The Last Jedi.
Fans may not have to wait for Lucasfilm to rev up the marketing campaign (which won't be until next year) to figure out Monaghan's part. Episode IX has already fallen victim to set leaks, with photos depicting Finn, Poe Dameron, and Chewbacca on some sort of mission. One possibility that can be discarded is Rey's dad, as it's highly unlikely Episode IX even deals with the scavenger-turned-Jedi's parents (who are deceased in the Jakku desert). Whether fans like the answer or not, the films have already answered that question and are moving on to new topics to cover.
