The first set photo from the Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been released and it includes a reference to a classic Sonic level, the Green Hill Zone. The upcoming live-action/CGI hybrid film is currently filming in Atlanta, Georgia.
In 2016, Sony Pictures announced plans to develop a Sonic the Hedgehog film. A year later, it was revealed that Paramount Pictures had acquired the rights to the character with the intention of producing a live-action film with a computer-generated Sonic. Directed by Jeff Fowler, the film will star James Marsden as a cop who befriends Sonic and Ride Along star Tika Sumter as the female lead. Deadpool director Tim Miller will executive produce. Sonic the Hedgehog is set for a fall 2019 release date.

The first set photo from the film was tweeted by Twitter user twip98; it shows a police car and a "Welcome" sign that reveals the name of the town where the film will take place: Green Hill. Fans of the Sonic franchise know that the name is a reference to the Green Hill Zone, the first level of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game, released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis.
The reference to the Green Hill Zone is sure to please fans of the video game franchise. The Green Hill Zone is easily the most recognizable Sonic level, as the 2D stage has been recreated for various Sonic games, including Sonic Generations, Sonic Mania, and Sonic Forces. The level was completely remade in 3D for Sonic Adventure 2 and is used as Sonic's stage in three installments of the Super Smash Bros. series.
Act 3 of the level features a boss battle with Sonic's archenemy, Dr. Eggman aka Dr. Ivo Robotnik. In the film, Dr. Eggman will be played by Jim Carrey. It's unclear what to expect from the film's plot or what will cause Sonic to clash with Dr. Eggman.
Sonic will somehow cross paths with Marsden's character, Tom, a cop who will aid Sonic in his upcoming adventure. His car could be the same one featured in the set photo. Sonic, typically portrayed as a straight-laced hero, will be a "juvenile delinquent" when he comes to the town of Green Hill and meets Tom. It's possible that Sonic will get himself into trouble with his arrival in Green Hill. If so, this could be what begins his adventure with Tom and his battle with Eggman.
