Mindhunter Season 2 Casting Breakdowns Reveal New Serial Killers

Casting breakdowns for season 2 of Netflix's Mindhunter reveal a new slew of serial killers that will be featured on the show. After exploring infamous serial killers like Edmund Kemper (the Co-Ed Killer) and Jerry Brudos (the Shoe Fetish Killer) in the show's first season, season 2 will go so far as exploring a real life killing spree surrounding William Friedkin's adaptation of The Exorcist

Based on the true crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker, Mindhunter is set in 1977 and follows the founding members of FBI's Behavioral Science Unit in Quantico, VA. Special Agents Holden Ford (played by Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (played by Holt McCallany) interview a number of imprisoned serial killers in order to potentially craft criminal profiles that might help solve future cases. Also starring Hannah Gross, Anna Torv, and Cotter Smith, the series is produced by David Fincher (who directed four episodes in the first season, including the pilot) and Charlize Theron, among others. Now, a casting breakdown has revealed the identities of other notable serial killers who will be featured in the upcoming second season.

The most notable names that appeared in the casting breakdown for season 2 of Mindhunter include famed killer and cult leader Charles Manson and famed killer David Berkowitz (aka the Son of Sam, who plead guilty to eight counts of murder in 1976), according to That Hashtag Show. Both men have been the inspiration for several movies and TV series, including Quentin Tarantino's upcoming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Spike Lee's Summer of Sam, respectively. That said, the second season will reportedly focus primarily on the overarching storyline based around Dennis Rader (aka the BTK Killer, played by Sonny Valicenti), as well as murderer Wayne Williams (who was convicted of killing two men, but was also tied to the Atlanta Child Murders between 1979 and 1981).

Other serial killers who will be featured in the upcoming season include Manson cult follower Tex Watson, Elmer Wayne Hanley (who was convicted of raping and killing roughly 28 teenage boys when he was 17 years old in 1973), William Pierce Jr. (who confessed to three out of nine murder accusations in 1971), William Henry Henry (aka the Stocking Strangler), and Paul Bateson (a background actor who starred in The Exorcist who targeted the LGBTQ community between 1977 and 1978).

Despite the quantity of serial killers featured in Mindhunter, the crux of the show is to explore the psychological motivation that led to said killers committing their respective crimes. So, it's less visually grisly than it is psychologically disturbing. Also, given that the BTK Killer wasn't caught until 1991, it's worth considering future seasons of Mindhunter will experience significant time jumps.

There is currently no premiere date for season 2 of Mindhunter.
